Just before all the terrible fires broke out in Southern California in November, I went with my son’s class to visit the local fire station. A little boy in his class has a dad who offered to show us around and teach the kids a little about firefighters. I have been to other fire station field trips with my other children, but never have I been to one that was taught with such care and commitment to truly teach the children (and us too!). We went through the station, learned how an emergency alarm goes off if one was sleeping at night, they learned about infrared viewing and how firefighters use this tool to see in the dark, rode in the fire truck (yep, rode!), watched a firefighter get completely dressed using his mask and teaching the kids not to be afraid of how a fire fighter sounds when he is masked, the kids fired off the hose and were taught so much about fire safety (as were we). I am so grateful to Ted Debs for the time he took to show us around and to truly teach us what he and so many do to keep us all safe. I have a huge amount of respect for all firefighters and I want to say Thank You to each and every one of them, especially the ones who fought the most recent fires we had. You are truly appreciated and we are so grateful to all of you and your families for the sacrifices you make to keep us safe.
